Ce mois-ci le musicien à l’honneur sur le site ITC-SRA est le joueur de sitar et de surbahar Santosh Banerjee, instrumentiste de la « vieille école », réputé et aimé comme professeur, et accessoirement père de Sahana Banerjee (que l’on a pu entendre plusieurs fois en Europe).

On peut y entendre un beau Raga Yaman Kalyan (SRA Music Circle Program, Kolkata, October 24, 1990 | Swapan Mookherjee, tabla), modèle de clarté, sans exagération ni maniérisme d’aucune sorte. Malheureusement pas une note de surbahar, qui est pourtant sa spécialité.

Born on 24th November 1931, Santosh Banerjee is a master player of the sitar and surbahar. Initially trained by Sri Aparesh Chatterjee, he later became disciple of the legendary Beenkar and torchbearer of the Rampur Senia Gharana, Ustad Mohammed Dabir Khan, who had made Kolkata his home. His association with Ustad Dabir Khan Saheb continued for nearly 25 years till the demise of the Ustad. From the Ustad, Santosh Banerjee learnt Dhrupad-Dhamar, typical `Dhrupadi Baaz` on Sitar and also the regal, almost extinct instrument, `Surbahar`. Today he is one of the few artistes who sincerely performs the traditional `baaz` (style of playing) on Surbahar.

Emotion and romanticism perfectly blended into the traditional purity of Khandar Vani along with tuneful alap, vistar and variation in the rhythmic pattern are the outstanding features of his performance.

Santosh Banerjee is former Head of the Department of Instrumental Music, Rabindra Bharati University. He has conducted innumerable lecture-demonstrations and seminars in Universities in India and abroad and has participated in many prestigious music festivals all over India.

Il y a quelques années, je me suis rendu avec K. et son épouse à Cologne à une Puja où Santosh Banerjee et sa fille devaient jouer. Nous avons attendu pendant plus d’une heure le début du concert, craignant le pire pour les musiciens, compte tenu de l’ambiance de goûter de patronage qui règnait. Quand nous avons finalement appris que les musiciens non seulement ne joueraient pas mais étaient repartis forts mécontents (ça je ne l’ai su que beaucoup plus tard) avant même le début de la soirée, nous avons été à la fois très frustrés et très soulagés.
