Pendant des années, cette discographie a été mon livre de chevet.
Rétrospectivement je m’aperçois que c’est là que j’ai fait la connaissance de la majorité des grands musiciens indiens, bien avant de découvrir leur musique, leur voix ou leur instrument, et, pour certains d’entre eux, de les voir en concert ou même de les rencontrer personnellement.
Bien avant l’arrivée d’internet, j’avais, malgré son prix exorbitant (85$ aujourd’hui), commandé ce livre par l’intermédiaire d’un collègue anglais. Je n’avais aucun autre document sur la musique indienne. Petit à petit je me suis rendu compte à quel point « le travail de Kinnear était unique, admirable et précieux.
Longtemps j’ai pensé que jamais je ne connaîtrais la musique compilée dans ce livre, alors qu’aujourd’hui on trouve des LP de Latafat Hussain Khan à l’état pratiquement neuf sur eBay!
